The Data Doctors Tip for making Firefox even faster (for high-speed Internet users):

1. Type “about:config” into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:

network.http.pipelining
network.http.proxy.pipelining
network.http.pipelining.maxrequests

Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.

2. Alter the entries as follows:

Set “network.http.pipelining” to “true”

Set “network.http.proxy.pipelining” to “true”

Set “network.http.pipelining.maxrequests” to some number like 30. This means it will make 30 requests at once.

3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it “nglayout.initialpaint.delay” and set its value to “0”. This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it receives.

If you’re using a broadband connection you’ll load pages MUCH faster now!”

    Hi Steve,

I’m playing catchup with your podcast, I just finished 76 this morning. Thanks for putting out such a great resource for small business start ups. I just wanted to pass along the fact that AVG anti virus is only free for personal use and not for commercial use. I’m constantly dealing with this sort of licensing thing in my consulting. Keep up the good work.

“AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition is for private, non-commercial, single computer use only. The use of AVG Free within any organization or for commercial purposes is strictly prohibited.”

  2. Steve Mullen says:

That is a VERY good point, Scott. I knew that (and I’m sure Ken did too) but forgot all about the fact that we were talking about small business uses. I wouldn’t worry about it for home-based sole proprietors, but certainly if you’re in an office with multiple employees, it’s absolutely breaking that user agreement.

Thanks for listening, and thanks for chiming in!
