Statistics Show We Should Resolve to Sleep Better in 2011

(Richmond, VA) – When it comes to getting a good night’s sleep, scientists say there’s no “magic number” of sleep hours to ensure proper rest for everyone. But, as the 2011 dawns and individuals go about making and trying to keep their new year’s resolutions, it’s clear that one resolution nearly all of us should make is to get a better night’s sleep.

“According to our research, most adults [55 percent] still believe that the traditional eight hours of sleep per night is the right amount of rest, but the vast majority don’t even get that much on the weekends.” said Dan Schecter, vice president of consumer products at Carpenter Co. and creator of leading sleep tips website SleepBetter.org. “A whopping 84 percent said they believe they could improve the quality of their sleep.”

Schecter noted it may be a challenge to eliminate stress or worries that cause sleepless nights. But there are some easy steps that can be taken to address common sleeping problems:

  • Take stock of sleeping gear: One in three Americans have a mattress that is more than five years old, and an uncomfortable or worn out mattress was an obstacle to better sleep. Almost half (48 percent) said they were still searching for a better product or solution when it comes to finding the perfect pillow. Old pillows lose their ability to provide proper support for a good night’s sleep.
  • Take control of sleeping environment: 38 percent said getting too hot is an obstacle in getting better sleep. This one’s easy: turn down the thermostat or turn on a ceiling fan.
  • Develop a sleep routine: Don’t just turn off the television, walk to bed, and expect to fall asleep right away each time. Schedule time for a relaxing wind-down activity such as reading a book or listening to quiet music before you try to go to sleep.
